Background of the Study
Strategic communication is an essential component of international relations, significantly influencing global narratives through state-sponsored media. In Abuja, government-funded media initiatives are employed to project a positive national image, promote foreign policy objectives, and counter negative perceptions (Roberts, 2023). This study examines how strategic communication efforts via state-sponsored media shape global narratives and influence international public opinion. It explores the methods and channels used to disseminate diplomatic messages, including television broadcasts, online news portals, and social media platforms. The research investigates the role of these media in constructing national narratives and shaping perceptions about political, economic, and cultural issues (Stevens, 2024). By analyzing content, audience feedback, and policy impacts, the study assesses the effectiveness of strategic communication in advancing the country’s diplomatic interests and enhancing its soft power. The findings provide insights into the interplay between media messaging and international relations, highlighting both the potential and challenges of state-sponsored communication in a globalized digital era (Turner, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Despite significant investments in state-sponsored media, the impact of strategic communication on shaping global narratives in Abuja is contested. Critics argue that while these media initiatives can enhance national image, they may also lead to biased reporting and a lack of credibility if not managed transparently (Roberts, 2023). Moreover, the challenge of countering competing narratives from international media sources complicates efforts to establish a unified global image. This study addresses whether current strategic communication efforts in Abuja effectively influence global narratives or if their impact is diminished by issues such as media bias, censorship, and inconsistent messaging (Stevens, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To analyze the strategic communication strategies used by state-sponsored media in Abuja.
To evaluate their impact on shaping global narratives.
To propose recommendations for enhancing the credibility and effectiveness of these initiatives.
Research questions
How do state-sponsored media shape global narratives in Abuja?
What are the main challenges affecting their credibility and impact?
What measures can improve strategic communication in international relations?
